Hurricane Dorian Response

Last week, Hurricane Dorian moved slowly north, causing days of prolonged destruction over the Bahamas before making landfall in North Carolina. By the time it reached the United States, the storm had weakened considerably. Early satellite data shows that between 75 to 100 percent of the buildings and infrastructure in the worst-hit areas of the Bahamas were damaged.

Recovery from this much damage will take years.

Early reports from the Bahamas indicate that all five of the Nazarene churches there were impacted by the hurricane’s Category 5 winds or damaged by serious flooding, with four to five feet of water inundating most buildings. A Nazarene assessment team has already traveled to the Bahamas, bringing aid packages with food and hygiene items. While they are there, they will be able to determine the best response.

Hurricane Dorian, which is one of the strongest on record, is the first major hurricane to make landfall this year. As the Atlantic hurricane season continues, it is possible that even more damage will come to areas already damaged by Dorian or in the 2018 season.

Please pray for those who are responding to the storm.
